Why Spotting a Wood Duck Always Feels Like a Win
Seeing a wood duck never feels ordinary.
They are bold and jewel-toned and also incredibly skittish. Most of the time, I catch only a ripple across the pond or a sudden burst of wings disappearing into the trees or skyline.
Wood ducks have a sharp, high-pitched call. If I hear that quick squeak near the water, I slow down. If I move carefully, sometimes I can spot them before I accidentally startle them. When I manage to get a clear photograph, it always feels like a small, satisfying victory.
That quiet observation at the pond became the foundation for my Wood Duck illustration, which also anchors a mini surface pattern collection inspired by freshwater habitats. Coordinating patterns draw from pond lilies, aquatic plants, and a delicate duckweed ditsy motif — elements that reflect the calm, layered environment where wood ducks thrive.
The Wood Duck piece is part of my growing Duck Art Collection and is also available within its coordinating mini pattern set.
Here below are some of my wood duck photos from my encounters over the years, that served as inspiration for the wood duck illustration along with the coordinating patterns.
